Cataract

Cataract is a common eye condition characterized by the clouding of the eye's natural lens, which leads to a decrease in vision. The lens of the eye is normally clear and allows light to pass through, focusing on the retina to form a sharp image. When a cataract develops, the lens becomes cloudy, causing blurry or hazy vision.

There are different types of cataracts, based on their location within the eye or the underlying cause. The main types of cataracts include:

  • Age-related Cataracts
  • Congenital Cataracts
  • Traumatic Cataracts
  • Secondary Cataracts

Retina

retina is a layer of tissue located at the back of the eye that plays a crucial role in vision. It contains specialized cells that convert light into electrical signals, which are then sent to the brain through the optic nerve. The brain interprets these signals, allowing us to see and perceive the world around us.

There are several key types of cells in the retina, each serving specific functions:

  • Photoreceptor cells
  • Bipolar cells
  • Ganglion cells
  • Horizontal cells and amacrine cells

Oculoplasty

The procedures performed in oculoplasty address a wide range of conditions that affect the eyelids, tear ducts, orbits (bony eye sockets), and surrounding facial tissues. Some common conditions and procedures in oculoplasty include:

  • Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty): This involves the surgical correction of droopy eyelids (ptosis) or the removal of excess skin and fat from the eyelids to improve aesthetics and vision if necessary.
  • Entropion and Ectropion Repair: Entropion is a condition where the eyelid turns inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the eye. Ectropion, on the other hand, is when the eyelid turns outward, leading to exposure and dryness of the eye. Oculoplastic surgery can correct these conditions by adjusting the eyelid position.
